Projects

EVO, Los Angeles, California

Overview

GeoDesign contributed design recommendations for an innovative top-down construction method on the EVO project, which includes a 23-story tower with three levels of below-grade parking.

The top-down method involves installing the foundation system before mass excavation. Installation of the shoring system and construction of the superstructure can then proceed during mass excavation.

The design team’s innovations on this project included using sheet piles for temporary shoring and permanent below-grade walls. We also fabricated a drilled shaft inspection camera, used to remotely inspect deep foundation shafts.

Value

  • Alternative design and construction methods reduced the construction schedule by three months.
  • The project was featured in a mini-series on Discovery Channel and received the 2008 SEAOC conference’s Most Innovative award.
