Fire Station No. 20, West Queen Anne Neighborhood, Seattle, Washington

Overview

GeoDesign completed a range of geotechnical and environmental services in support of the Fire Station No. 20 replacement project, which included demolition of existing buildings to allow for construction of the new station.

Our scope included geotechnical services during design to support site preparation, foundation support, recommendations and design support for a tiered cantilever pile retaining wall, and an in situ thermal conductivity test to support HVAC system design.

We also completed environmental sampling and analysis to evaluate risk associated with a former dry cleaning business that was located on the site.  Additionally, GeoDesign’s environmental work involved developing a methane mitigation design plan and contaminated media management plan. Construction was completed in December 2014.

Value

  • GeoDesign’s in situ conductivity testing and analysis supported design of the fire station’s geothermal well field – one of many sustainable features that earned this project LEED Platinum status.
  • As the project is within 1,000 feet of the methane-producing historical Interbay landfill, our mitigation plan using passive collection and capping methods provides an extra layer of environmental safety for the life of the structure.
