Projects

I-5 Delta Park, Victory Boulevard to Lombard, Portland, Oregon

Overview

GeoDesign provided geotechnical services for the widening of the I-5 Columbia Slough Bridge and I-5 Columbia Boulevard Bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Our work included:

  • deep foundation design of driven piles and large-diameter drilled shafts
  • embankment stability studies
  • reinforced earthslope and retaining wall design

Value

  • As part of the design team, we helped develop an innovative retaining wall system to widen and realign Columbia Boulevard over the steep banks of the Columbia Slough.
  • The shored-MSE retaining wall system allowed the southbound on-ramp to I-5 to remain open during construction in an area with heavy truck traffic.
  • Our detailed field documentation contributed to an ODOT review panel’s decision to deny over $850,000 in construction claims made by the foundation subcontractor.
  • Due to the design team’s efforts, the project was completed early and $5 million below the contractor’s bid.
